On behalf of the Gathercole family we wish nothing but the best for Walt’s Family. Walt was an extraordinary person with a big heart. Walt was the only person I know growing up in the fire service who would respond to calls all day long and render his service directing traffic and then with other time serve the people of the City. Walt and his wife Millie could be seen all around Coatesville and the municipalities surrounding Coatesville. They gave their life to serving others and now they are back together again.

In the fire service Walt was someone no matter what the weather was like hot or cold he would be there. Rain or snow he was always there. Walt served in the Fire Police for Modena, Westwood and Coatesville and was a great mentor to many young people in the fire service. His devotion and contribution to each company was with pride and dedication which does not come easy anymore. He could always be found at Westwood Bingo and was a great friend and peer of my Grandfather Harold Rooney. More than that he was a great family friend to the Gathercole Family and was a person that always supported by Father “Scats” as Fire Chief. No matter what the circumstance if Scats called Walt would be there. He was a mentor in Lukens Steel and in the fire service.

I wish nothing but the best to the family of Walt and know that he is up there happy, back together again with his wife. God Bless You All.

Walt will always be remembered for his selfless gift of time and service to so many and for his love of family. Never have I known a couple to be so united in life's purpose and enjoyment than Millie and Walt. They touched my life in wonderful ways. We shared many adventures through Girl Scouts and camping. He was invaluable as we grew the Coatesville Area Senior Center, volunteering from the building committee to the kitchen crew. More importantly his smile and kindness were ever present and most welcome. This same spirit pervaded the Olivet Methodist church and the fire police. He will truly be missed but leaves behind many warm memories.
