Robert Franklin Roussey, Sr., 94, husband of the late Rhoda M. Diem Roussey, died on Friday, May 4, at Tel Hai Retirement Community, Honey Brook, where he had lived since 2006.
Bob and Rhoda, who died in June 2008, were married on July 5, 1941, in Coatesville and would have celebrated their 67th anniversary.
Bob was the son of the late Carroll F. and Della Mae Herrman Roussey. He was born in Harford County, MD, near Conowingo and lived in various locations in southern Chester County during his childhood. He was one of 12 siblings (only his sister, Helen McClellan of Wayne survives) and graduated from Avon Grove High School, West Grove.
Bob was among the U.S. Army’s original paratroopers after being drafted in 1942. He fought in France in World War II, parachuting into Normandy on D-Day June 6, 1944. He was a corporal in the third platoon, second squad of Co. B., 1st Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He was wounded on June 15, 1944, at La Bonneville in Normandy, losing his right eye in combat. He served in France until the war ended in November 1945. He received a Purple Heart medal and various combat and service medals and ribbons.
After the war, Bob trained to become a carpenter and built his own house on Caln Meeting House Road in Caln Township, where he and his wife and children lived from 1948 until 2006 when Bob and Rhoda moved to Tel Hai.
Bob was a 1982 retiree of the former G. O. Carlson, Inc., stainless steel company in Coatesville. He worked there for 25 years.
Bob was known among his friends for his humorous disposition and among his family for his storytelling and knowledge of family history. Bob was proud to be an American patriot and was a direct descendant of veterans of the American Revoluntionary War, Civil War and World War I.
